Sleep is one thing that all of us can improve on in our lives. A good night’s sleep is important for any big job interview. Some keys to a great job interview are being prepared, being confident and getting plenty of rest the night before! Here are some suggestions to help you accomplish this!

MELATONIN

This is a natural substance that our body produces in anticipation of rest, and it adds to a solid circadian cadence (a person’s day and night cycle) also aiding to sound dreams a decent measure of REM rest.  Sometimes we just need a boost in this substance.  Most people find that Melatonin relaxes them lending to easing restlessness and falling asleep faster.  Very few people report having daytime sleepiness and most report that they awake rested without feeling foggy.

MEDITATION

Releasing tension in your body will ease restlessness.  Lay down and begin with your feet and work your way up to your neck.  Beginning with your feet, create tension in them and hold that for 10 seconds then release.  Go to your calves, create tension, hold for 10 seconds and release.  Do this going all the way up to your neck.  This will help relax all of your muscles and that in turn will help you focus on your body for a few minutes relaxing not only your body but your brain as well. 

NEURO SLEEP DRINK

This is a 14.5 ounce sleep aid drink.  Neuro Sleep contains both tryptophan and melatonin.  I’m sure you have all heard that turkey makes you sleepy because it contains tryptophan and it turns out that is true!  Tryptophan is an essential that your body does not produce naturally so we must get in from foods and aids such as Neuro Sleep.  It helps with nitrogen balance and helps us to sleep.  When you first try this only drink half to see how you feel.  Most people report falling asleep within an hour even with only drinking half.  The sleep is peaceful without side effects in the morning.  There are likely a-typical people that find they are tired in the morning, but the normal response is to wake up feeling well rested without feeling drained or sluggish.  They have greatly improved the flavors so there are a number of options and they taste really good!

DEEP BREATHING

When you lay down to sleep besides switching your brain to positive thoughts deep breathing helps to keep you on track.  All of us will find our thoughts wander as we try to keep it focused.  This is totally normal and all you have to do is recognize it and do your best to not get stuck there.  If you lay still and breath deeply your body will release tension.  Take a deep breath through your nose, hold it for 5 seconds and then release it forcefully from your mouth.  Do this for as long as you need to and you will find that it helps to clear your mind and release the natural tension in your body. 

ZZZQUIL

This is an over the counter sleep aid.  This will work but it is a heavy aid and will likely make you feel drowsy throughout the day.  For some people it works and they feel fine, for a lot of people it is too heavy of a sleep aid.  ZZZQuil is not something that you want to take for an extended period of time.  It should be something you take every once in a while.  Some people have reported blurred vision throughout the day after taking this.  Of course you can try it and if it works for you, great!  However, use with caution.  The suggested dose is two pills, begin with one and see how you feel.  Increase to two if needed.

ALCOHOL

While alcohol is a depressant and can make you sleepy it is far from an effective sleep aid.  While it can help you to fall asleep and stay asleep, the more alcohol in your system the less REM sleep you will have.  REM stimulates regions in the brain associated with learning.  REM is also when you dream.  Dreaming releases stress and anxiety and without that you will not feel as rested the following day.  Bottom line, alcohol is not the answer to sleep. 

SCREEN TIME

Our dependency on our phones, computers and tablets effects all aspects of our lives in many ways.  You want to stop or limit your screen time for at least two hours before going to sleep.  Staring at the screen can cause less focus and clarity which will prevent your brain from “shutting off” when you lay down to go to sleep.  While the convenience of them is difficult to dispute, the negative effects on our brains is indisputable.  Less screen time and more deep breathing and meditation will help in extensive ways.

Keep in mind, taking anything on a daily basis for an extended period of time is not helpful.  Sleep aids are meant to get you into a pattern of being able to relax and fall asleep easier.  You should not need to take anything every night.  Aids are far sporadic and/or temporary use.
